Astra Free is a real point-of-sale plan, not a trial that expires. Ring up tickets, take payment, keep your transaction history, track customers and manage inventory — for $0 a month, with no credit card required.
Searching for a free POS system usually turns up a long list of products that are free in the headline and expensive in the fine print. It is worth knowing the difference before you put your business on one.
A point-of-sale system is the place where money actually changes hands in your business. It rings up the sale, takes the payment, prints or texts the receipt, and leaves behind a record you can look at later. Every business that sells something needs one, whether it is a purpose-built system or a cash drawer and a notebook.
The problem with a notebook is that it does not tell you anything. At the end of the week you know roughly what came in, but not what sold, not who bought it, not which day was worth staying open for. A POS system turns the same daily activity into information you can use.
The reason people search for a free POS system is simple: at the start, or during a slow stretch, another monthly bill is the last thing a small business needs. The good news is that free is a real option. The catch is that "free" means very different things depending on who is offering it.
Free POS software is almost always a way to sell you something else. That is not automatically a bad deal — but you should know which one you are being offered before you commit your business to it.
This is the most common arrangement. The software costs nothing, but you must run your card payments through that company, at their published rate. If your business takes $40,000 a month in card sales, half a percentage point of difference in that rate is $200 a month — considerably more than most paid POS software costs. The software was free. The processing paid for it several times over.
Everything you would actually use daily — appointments, staff accounts, reporting that goes past a daily total — sits behind an add-on price. The free tier exists to get you in the door and is not really designed to be used.
The plan covers one register, which is fine, but the moment the business grows to a second checkout station the price jumps from zero to a full subscription with no step in between.
A 14- or 30-day trial described in marketing as a free POS system. It is not free; it is a trial, and it ends.
None of these are scams. They are business models. The one that matters to you is the one whose cost lands where your business can absorb it — so when you evaluate a free POS system, the useful question is not "is it free?" but "what is it free in exchange for?"
We would rather say it plainly. Astra Free exists because we would rather you use our software than read about it. Some businesses on the free plan will grow into a paid plan, and some will decide to move their card processing to us because it is a better rate than what they have. Neither is required, and neither is a condition of the free plan. If you stay on Free for years and never spend a dollar, the plan still works.
Astra Free is $0 per month with no credit card required to open the account. It covers the front-desk essentials:
The core job of any POS. Build a ticket, add services or products, apply a discount, take the payment and close it out. No handwritten tickets, no calculating totals in your head at the counter while a customer waits.
Every closed ticket stays searchable. When a customer comes back with a question about last Tuesday, or you need to check what a particular sale actually included, it is there instead of somewhere in a stack of paper receipts.
Daily and period totals so you can see what came in without adding it up yourself. Not a full analytics suite — that is what the paid plans are for — but enough to answer "how did we do today" honestly.
Names, contact details and history in one place. For most small businesses this is the single most valuable thing a POS creates, because a customer list is an asset you own and can market to later. Starting it on day one is worth far more than starting it in year three.
Track the products you sell alongside your services, so you know what is moving and what has been sitting on the shelf since spring.
This is the part that separates Astra Free from most free POS systems, so it is worth being specific.
Astra Free records two kinds of payment. Cash, and external card — a card payment you run on the terminal you already have, logged into the ticket, with the last four digits if you want them there. Your existing processor, your existing rate, your existing contract, untouched.
That means you can put your business on Astra Free without renegotiating anything, without a new merchant application, and without a cancellation fee from whoever you are with now. If you later decide our processing rate beats what you are paying, that is a separate conversation you can have whenever you want — or never.
Integrated card processing, tip-on-card, split payment and gift cards are paid-plan features. That is the honest trade: the free plan handles the money, the paid plans handle it more smoothly.
A free plan that pretends to have no limits is a free plan that is hiding them. Here are ours.

One location, one terminal, one login. If you are a solo operator or a small shop with a single front desk, that is your whole business and the free plan fits it. If you have three stations checking people out at once, you will hit the ceiling on day one — and it is better to know that now than after you have entered your service menu.
You can compare Astra Free against the paid plans in full on the pricing page.
We would rather tell you this up front than have you sign up and be disappointed. Astra Free is probably not enough if you need staff accounts and permissions, if you run payroll or commission splits, if you take appointments and want customers to book online, if you need more than one checkout station, or if you want tips on card and split payments handled inside the ticket.
Those businesses should look at Core, Pro or Max — or start on Free anyway to learn the system, and move up when the gaps start to cost you time. Which brings us to the part most people worry about.
The reason people hesitate to start on a free plan is the fear of doing the work twice — building your service menu, entering your customers, running for six months, and then being told the upgrade means starting over.
That does not happen here. Upgrading only adds. Your tickets, customers, inventory and history stay exactly where they are. Nothing is migrated, nothing is re-keyed, nothing is reset. There is no setup fee and no migration fee to move from Free to a paid plan — the new features simply turn on in the system you are already using.
That is deliberate. A free plan you have to abandon in order to grow is not much of a free plan.
Whether or not you end up on Astra, these are the questions worth asking any vendor offering free POS software:
You can open the actual Astra POS interface right now, loaded with sample data, and use it. Create a ticket, take a payment, look at the reports. No account, no credit card, no sales call, no form.
We put the demo in front of the signup on purpose. A POS system is something your staff will touch a hundred times a day — you should find out whether it feels right before you commit anything to it, including your email address.
Astra POS is built around service businesses — the workflows of a salon, spa or barbershop rather than a generic retail register. If that describes your business, these go deeper on your specific case:
Yes, but you have to read what the free is attached to. Most free POS systems are free only while you process payments through that company at their rates. For a single-location business with one checkout station, yes — a free POS covers the essentials: ring up the sale, take payment, keep the record, know what sold. Businesses that need staff scheduling, payroll, online booking or a second terminal will outgrow a free plan, and should plan for that rather than be surprised by it.
No. Astra POS runs in a browser, so a computer or tablet you already own is enough to get started. If you want a proper front-desk setup later, we sell hardware bundles and qualified businesses can receive equipment through our free POS hardware program.
Yes. Your customer list and transaction history are your business's data and can be exported. Data ownership and export are covered in the plan agreement and in our data processing policy.
